Media City Master Plan

A self-sufficient, sustainable city and cultural attraction with innovative, interactive planning and structures echoing developments in technology.

Media City is an industrial complex designed by GAD as part of Istanbul's new airport, completed in 2018. The project responds to a commission from the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce to design a site supporting Istanbul's multimedia, publishing and printing industry. GAD aimed not only to create a self-sufficient, sustainable city but also a dynamic cultural attraction with innovative, interactive planning and structures echoing developments in technology.

The plan proposes a network system of buildings, parks, streets, etc., that can be repeated, manipulated, adjusted, and organized in grids similar to software paradigms used in QR codes. This approach brings together the physical and digital world, joining content and publishing with a new idea for post-industrial city life. The project's concept is rooted in the intersection of technology and urban planning.

Media City has received international recognition, winning several awards including the 2017 WAFX Smart City Prize, The American Architecture Prize, and AR Future Projects Awards. These accolades demonstrate the project's innovative approach to sustainable and interactive urban design.

The success of Media City showcases GAD's ability to merge technology and architecture to create dynamic, intriguing cultural attractions that redefine post-industrial city life.
